Understanding Design

So what is Interior Design? You would think that being an Interior Design student, I would be able to answer this question to any random person in a heart beat. The reality is, its not as easy as it seems. Now don't get me wrong, I know what the process is but how do i explain myself to someone that doesn't know? Specially someone who thinks of me as furnishing and adorning a space.

I want them to value and appreciate my career just as much as I do. Being at the Art Institute I've learned the steps that most people don't see. Most people walk into a well designed room and may think it looks attractive, but the process it took wasn't just that purpose. I've learned that every project needs research, case studies, programmatic development, formal analysis, ideation, conceptual development, construction documents, detailing, material selections, lighting. rendering, perspective drawings, and the list goes on (design language). These are just some of the steps it takes to develop a functional space.

The point is I've learned to understand the science of peoples behavior. I don't just make a nice well furnished room, Ive learned to apply creative and technical solutions withing a space to make them functional, attractive, and beneficial to the occupant. I really believe that our society needs a lesson in what the true meaning of Interior Design is, because its more important than what they make it seem.
